Before Hippocampus ever existed, we were simply two people who fell in love with the worlds inside books. We read fantasy the way some people breathe: constantly, curiously, and with the kind of devotion that makes you miss fictional characters like old friends. Hippocampus Fantasy Books & Café was born from that devotion.
Right now, we are bringing that vision to life through pop-up events in West Chester, Pennsylvania, focused on what we love most: fantasy books and immersive games. These pop-ups are our way of gathering readers and players together — even before we have walls of our own.
At its heart, Hippocampus is devoted to fantasy, sci-fi, and the beautifully strange in between. From epic and high fantasy to romantasy, paranormal, and urban worlds, our shelves celebrate the full spectrum of imagination. At our pop-ups, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of fantasy and sci-fi books alongside board games, tabletop favorites, role-playing accessories, and Magic: The Gathering products. While our long-term vision includes a café element, our current pop-ups are centered on books, games, and community. They are small but intentional spaces where you can browse, discover something new, and connect with people who love stories as much as you do.
West Chester is walkable, creative, and community-driven. With thousands of students nearby and a vibrant downtown filled with independent businesses, it’s the kind of town where people enjoy wandering into local shops, chatting with owners, and discovering something unexpected. And yet, there isn’t a bookstore devoted solely to fantasy — no space blending storytelling and tabletop culture in one place. Through our pop-ups, we’re beginning to change that.
